As many of you know, the USGA adopted new guidelines this year regarding club grooves. Instead of using clubs with grooves shaped like a “U”, we now have to use clubs with grooves shaped like a “V”. While this doesn’t mean much to weekend golfers, it has a big impact on professionals.
As of Jan. 1, new rules relating to club-face grooves were implemented at the top level after research found modern configurations could allow players to generate almost as much spin with irons from the rough as from the fairway.
All clubs, with the exception of drivers and putters, have been affected by the change which limits groove volume and groove-edge sharpness, effectively replacing U-grooves with V-grooves.
Larger volume grooves can help channel away more material such as water or grass while sharper groove edges allow better contact between club and ball, thereby increasing the chance of backspin.
This means that I have new Taylor-Made R9 irons, and new Titleist wedges. I really appreciate both Taylor Made and Titleist for sending them my way, but the magic really comes from the guys at Fuzion Golf in Jupiter, Florida. Chris Dempsey and the guys there have spent hours on my club, adjusting every loft and lie, head and shaft, till they are perfect. Fuzion Golf’s facility is first class, and they have just about every piece of equipment known to man. My guess is that they are equipped, as much or more than any club manufacturer out there!! If you play golf, you are really missing out unless they help you. I bet you could drop a couple strokes easy by just having them tweak things for you!
With my clubs in perfect form, I am feeling great, and excited about heading to the West Coast later this week. My brother JC will be on the bag for me, and it will be exciting to compete again. My last tournament was in Corning, NY last summer, when I had to withdraw because of foot issues!
I am sorry I have neglected the blog lately, but now and back in the swing of things.
Thanks to everyone for your notes and messages!
