I held a meet and greet and clinic with several families affiliated with the Northern New Jersey chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation on Wednesday. As most of you know, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 13. Today, my foundation, The Michelle McGann Fund, has a mission to further the efforts of organizations like the Diabetes Research Institue and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. I plan on holding several meet and greets throughout the season with local chapters of the JDRF! This is my 2nd of the year after having one in Phoenix, and I am going to host another next week in Corning, NY.
I spoke to the children and their parents at the Upper Montclair Country Club driving range about steps they can take to control their diabetes while continuing to lead an active lifestyle. We talked about what to eat, what to avoid, how to handle adrenalin boosts during competition and how important it is to stay hydrated when exercising. Diabetes can strike children suddenly, making them insulin-dependent for life. The mission of the JDRF is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
It was a great afternoon, and I am blessed that I am able to give these kids some hope that they can reach their goals. Sure, diabetes is a challenge, but its a challenge that is meant to be overcome!
Many thanks to my friends at the LPGA, JDRF International, Northern New Jersey Chapter of JDRF, and the folks from Octagon (the Tournament Organizer) for all of their assistance in organizing the afternoon!
